Cataract

Condition

The transparent lens in the human eye is located behind the pupil. The function of this lens is to focus light on the retina. We speak of a cataract when the lens becomes cloudy and the images become blurred. Causes include old age, diabetes, cortisone use...

Cataracts usually develop very gradually over the years, but sometimes the process can be faster, especially the distance vision becomes more blurred with photophobia.

If you are hindered in your daily activities, Dr De Brauwer will consider treatment with you.

Investigation

Cataracts are usually detected during a routine consultation or when you make an appointment for complaints of vision loss.

If Dr De Brauwer diagnoses a cataract and proposes cataract surgery in consultation with you, you will make a new appointment for the preliminary examinations.

Therapy

There is no medication that can prevent or treat cataracts. The only treatment is a surgical procedure (phacoemulsification) in which the patient's cloudy lens is removed through a very small incision in the eye and replaced with an artificial lens (lens implant).
